2 years in

Two years into this teaching thing and I'm still going strong. Strong enough to endure, preserve, and endure. I already said that, right. I'm hanging in there. I love my job. Teaching young minds to appreciate math is my goal. Or at least to get them to say "I hate math!" a lot less.
I'm taking mathematics to the court and making my debut as an assistant volleyball coach. Volleyball is my second love in life, but got neglected because of the first, that and I wanted to grow five inches. So for all my girls out there willing to put up with my whistle blow, yelling and badgering this video is for you. Enjoy.

The Coffee Shop Math Game

Yeah, that's right I'm posting again. Grad school has dragged me down to being a non-blogger. I am a pro sleeper during any down time I get. But I found something cute so I have to share.

For those of you who don't know, I'm a coffee shop owner in addition to being a mathematician. So, you will understand why I posted this game. CLICK HERE.

Have lots of coffee fun!!!

So maybe I don't know what I am doing...

The more I do math the more I am convinced that I really don't know what the heck is going on. And the more I am convinced that I need a math community around me to help me understand what is. I mean, math is one of those things that no one can know everything about. My reasoning is that the world is comprised of math and there is no way we (humankind) can know all there is to know about the world, therefore we can't know all about math. If we knew all about the world there would be no mystery left, no sense of discovery, no panache or no spice of life. How boring would that be? We'd just sleep all the time. Zzzzzz

My quest: Make life less confusing for all math confused folks. My weapon of choice; technology.

So all you mathematicians, I know I'm not as smart as some us can be, but can we stick together? Can I get some support? Hey, blog me and I'll blog you. Show me your youtube and I'll show mine. And some techies jump in the mix for measure. We can't create on big mathnetopia of technology and information! In fact, I want to do a production "Mathematics, the Musical!" I guess I need some singer/songwriters in my support group too. We'll captivate podcastees, and youtubers everywhere before hitting the silver screen. LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!!!

I may not know what I am doing at times. But I'll have fun anyway. Hopefully I create a few math fanatics along the way.

The thing about math is...

If anyone would have asked me my thoughts about technology is the classroom a few months ago, I would have said, "Yeah, it's alright." And not given it any serious consideration when it actually came down to creating my lesson plans. Now, however, I have been enlightened. So enlightened that I've been dreaming of ways to input technology into my classroom, literally. Early this morning I was dreaming of showing youtube clips of a football game with a running back eating up the yards, then stopping the clip to ask my students relevant math questions that they observe on the field.

The thing about math is that it's inherent to all of us, but somehow gets construed, difficult and unnatural as life goes on. I was told this is the difference between street mathematics and school mathematics. I truly believe I can merge the two with the help of technology. I want to make learning this subject fun and natural again.
